What height should I mount my TV?
Try our TV size and viewing distance calculator
For starters we need to know where the tv will be located and where or how it will typically be watched. For bedrooms, TVs are generally higher due to the height of the bed but also since most people watch TV while lying in bed with their heads slightly tilted upward with a pillow, mounting heights for most tv’s while still allowing optimal distance for a dresser underneath along with home decor or pictures on top usually puts the TV in the 52” to 60” height range measured from the bottom of the TV, this is a mix between or compromise between optimal viewing height, practical use, and good room aesthetics.
Now for Living rooms or mixed use spaces, such as studio apartments where the bedroom and living room area are combined can be a compromise between the bedroom height and living room height. Another example is a combined kitchen, dining, living room or an open arrangement. If one of the primary areas of viewing the tv will be from standing at a kitchen or island, or higher up on bar stools you will want to take this into account when mounting your tv. Living room heights: For living rooms we have found out over thousands of home visits that the optimal height both aesthetically and practically is 40-45” to the bottom of the tv. This allows for slightly tilted head viewing which is easy on the eyes, neck and back while also allowing enough distance for a tv stand and sideboard underneath while still looking like it belongs in the room. However, for mixed use spaces where the TV will be watched from the kitchen or dining area a good portion of the time, then 50” to the bottom of the tv is usually a fitting height. Now you may want to consider these heights in conjunction with watching distance to make the right TV size purchase if you haven’t already done so. (you can read our blog and use our calculator “What size tv should I buy?”)
Other factors: If you are in a tiny space where the tv will be close to the viewer, you may want to raise the tv up from the suggested height to create distance, which will result in better viewing experience.
